Well I interviewed with that marketing firm that works for Christian publishing houses and individual authors. I'd be writing press releases, contacting media from across the nation, and really liked the people. Plus, it's minutes away from my house! They offered me the job, and I was so excited. This glimpse made me realize how mundane and predictable my current job is. It's basically a glorified paper-pushing, data entry position.
My heart fell when I realized that since they're so small they don't have benefits and I'd be taking a pay cut in salary. They offered me a salary that was "we don't care about your college degree" low. Granted, it would only be $3,000 less than I am currently making, but still! My dad convinced me to write back and refuse unless they raised their offer $5000. I wasn't optimistic, though, especially when he didn't e-mail me all day.
So I went back to work at the Tank today and convinced myself to like the job. I was really productive and sort of got a thrill from my system of organization I have learned to develop. We had a baby shower for one of the engineering secretaries, and everyone was so funny. I was thinking how glad I was that I didn't have to quit when I was finally working well on my own. Everyone was so patient with me and welcoming. It was nice.
When I got home from work, there was an e-mail waiting for me. The marketing firm met my request:
We would be thrilled to have you on board with our company and exploring and developing the world of Publicity with us… And I hope that we could be a company that you could plug into and use your God given talents to fulfill your desires and dreams of becoming a world renowned publicist.
With that in mind we would like to extend an employment offer to you of $XXXXX a year… There will be a 90 day evaluation period, to evaluate your work flow and quality of work at that point. We feel confident in your abilities to help take us to the next level.
Thanks again for your excitement and dedication.
If you could please let me know the date you would like to start, we will make sure we are ready.
Thanks again
God Bless!
I am nervous to say the least. Do I really want to be a world-renowned publicist? I am having doubts, like I always do when something so final happens. Is $3000 more a year worth risking it with a young company that has big aspirations? We're talking a company of maybe 4 or 5 people. I'd be in a Christian atmosphere, which would be nice. I'd still be making a teacher's salary, but it would be a little more. They said I'd have a lot of independence. I am basically going to have to learn how to be a publicist on my own, get my own contacts, and figure it out on my own.
Please, if you're out there, help me make some sense out of this!
